Three Cheers for Cheerios?
What is it? Cheerios is a heart healthy breakfast cereal that most people in America love. You can top off the nutritious breakfast food with honey or choose any of its different products,  but what's in the cereal that everyone loves?

This cereal has many natural flavors and lots of whole grain, but there are some chemicals used for Cheerios.

Tripotassium phosphate
Tripotassium phosphate(K3PO4) is a chemical compound widely known for being used in any Cheerios product and is used in many other food products as a food additive. It is made in labs. K3PO4 is a white, powdery substance that feels like powdered sugar rather than grainy. There are health risks with this chemical compound, but the FDA turns the other cheek when used in foods. It is used as a buffer in Cheerios to adjust the acidic nature of the cereal dough.

Niacinamide (B Vitamin)
Niacinamide is a water soluble vitamin and is part of the B Vitamin group. It's chemical formula is C6H6N2O. This B Vitamin offers multiple benefits for aging skin and ts physical properties include a bitter taste, practically white, and its form is a crystalline powder. It is found in many foods such as yeast, meat, fish, and dairy; and is used for Vitamin B3 deficiency and to treat high cholesterol. It is used in Cheerios to help lower high cholesterol.

 Mixed Tocopherols (Vitamin E)
Vitamin E, chemical formula C29H50O2, is also known by many names including Alpha-Tocopherol and D-Alpha- Tocopherol. It is considered very essential for the  stabilization of biological membranes, especially those with high amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids; it is used in Cheerios for this reason as well as it being used for treating diabetes, lung and oral cancers, and can help prevent heart diseases. Vitamin E is found in many foods including vegetable oils, cereals, meat, poultry, eggs, fruits, vegetables, and wheat germ oil. Its health risks however, are still unclear.

  1. I think it's good that I could learn about some of the chemicals that are included in Cheerios and their effects, which I did not previously know about.
